Hillside Recycling Fire

On Wednesday, February 2, 2012 my commute home included the site of black smoke on the east end of the valley I live in. The radio stated in the news that:

A welder's spark caused blaze that destroyed Box Elder recycling plant

The damage may top $1 million in a the Wednesday afternoon fire that destroyed a 7,500-square-foot recycling facility in this small town east of Tremonton.

The fire was reported at 1:40 p.m. at Hillside Recycling, 12090 N. Highway 38.

A welder was working on an addition to the building when a spark from his torch set nearby plastic on fire. The resulting fire quickly engulfed the building.

The facility recycles plastics, paper, Styrofoam and other types of plastic foam.

The resulting fire quickly engulfed the building. It was estimated that 10 workers were in the building and all escaped unharmed.

The facility is a total loss. Two forklifts were destroyed, and the company’s ability to accept recyclables from numerous firms and recycling bins throughout Northern Utah also went up in smoke.

The fire sent huge black plumes of smoke into the air, visible from Interstate 15. Firefighters did not have to evacuate any homes because the wind blew the smoke in a safe direction.

The fire was out by 8 p.m. and the owners kept an eye out for hot spots overnight.
